Between
1868 and 1982 most Spanish coins displayed two dates. The
larger date was the year that coin type was authorized while the
actual year of mintage is displayed in small font on one or two
stars included in the design. The 100 Peseta coin at right was
authorized in 1975 but was actually minted in 1976.
Sometimes
just the last digit of the year is displayed as with this 1 Centimo
coin minted in 1906.
Of course this can make it difficult to determine the date on
well circulated pieces.
